Reviews
"Bright and clear colour and hue; a fragrant bouquet leads into an extremely finely boned and structured palate, a quiet statement of superiority from 150-year-old vines. 96 Points” – James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion
The Old Garden vineyard is the oldest Mourvèdre vineyard in the world, planted in 1853. Dry-grown, original existing vines, pre-Phylloxera. Eight rows of this rare and unique planting remain to this day at Rowland Flat and produce winemaker Dean Hewitson’s much-lauded single-vineyard table wine bearing the Old Garden name. The vineyard has been hand-tended and dry-farmed by Friedrich Koch and his direct descendants across three centuries.
Our Mourvèdre, from the 2007 vintage, is now fully evolved and deeply expressive, revealing an intricate bouquet of worn leather and game, layered with dried fig, tobacco, and warm spice. On the palate, it is supple and resolved, with softened tannins and a savoury depth. Together carried by a long, mellow, and harmonious finish. 12 bottle available.
